Montreal Canadiens Come to Terms with Young Goaltender

July 6, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that they have signed goaltender Jakub Dobes to a two-year contract extension. The deal comes with a cap hit of $965K. Also, it is a one-way deal. That was important to show the young Dobes that the team has confidence in his play. Let’s find out more about the player and his impact on the Habs.

Canadiens Sign Jakub Dobes to Contract Extension

Jakub Dobes made the jump to the NHL this past season, and the rookie played extremely well. In 16 appearances for the Canadiens, Dobes posted a 7-4-3 record with a 2.76 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. He also recorded a shutout in the first game of the season.

Dobes made 3 appearances for the Canadiens during the Stanley Cup Playoffs as well, going 1-2 with a 2.91 goals-against average and an .881 save percentage. That will turn out to be invaluable experience down the road.

The Canadiens originally drafted Dobes in the fifth round, 136th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Dobes Provides Stability in the Crease for the Canadiens

Dobes will now be relied upon to form a solid tandem with current starter Sam Montembeault. After Cayden Primeau failed to secure the backup duties full time behind Montembeault, the Habs called up Dobes and the rest is history. Primeau has been since shipped off to the Carolina Hurricanes. You could kind of see this type of thing materializing, signing Dobes to an NHL deal that is.

Dobes hit the ground running in his NHL debut, making 34 saves en route to a 4-0 shutout win against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers. The Canadiens have no reason to believe he can’t continue that type of play. This value contract gives Dobes time to prive he is an NHL regular. General manager Kent Hughes and the fans are excited to see what happens.
