NHL Cancels 2026 All-Star Game

April 29, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

2026 NHL All-Star Game

The NHL has announced that it has canceled the 2026 All-Star Game. Next year’s mid-season showcase was supposed to take place at the UBS Arena, which is the home arena for the New York Islanders. However, the league will be doing a “kick off” event for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

2026 NHL All-Star Game Canceled; Kickoff Event Will Be Held

The Elmont, New York-based venue was going to hold its first NHL All-Star Game since opening the arena in November 2021. It would have been the first time that Long Island hosted the mid-season classic since 1983. However, the league is going in a different direction.

The NHL All-Star Game had been a 3-on-3 tournament based on divisions in 2016. However, the league opted to go with the Four Nations Face-Off this year. This year’s event was the first best-on-best international hockey tournament since the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The format was a unique one, but it was a massive hit. Buzz surrounded the tournament and it got mainstream press. Canada ended up winning the tournament, but the hype for more international hockey is now there.

What It Means

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league will ” do something that’s more focused on a major hockey event for the following year.” There are still openings for All-Star events in  2027, 2029, and 2031.

The league will have NHL players involved in the 2026 and 2030 Winter Olympics. It will also have another international tournament with the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. The traditional All-Star showcase format may still happen, but it may only be every couple of years.

This change also comes as a number of pro sports leagues are thinking about retooling their all-star events. The NFL changed the Pro Bowl from a traditional football game to a series of skill events. NBA officials are also thinking about a USA versus the World format for future incarnations.
