NHL Predictions April 9th: Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

April 10, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Welcome back to NHL Predictions, where we break down matchups, analyze stats, and thank the heavens that we aren’t the Houston Cougars after that March Madness final Monday night.  Tonight, the Tampa Bay Lightning square off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a clash that promises elite firepower and playoff-level intensity. Will the Lightning strike in Ontario, or will the Leafs sprout up just in time for spring? Let’s dig in.

NHL Predictions

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Time: 7:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

TV: ESPN+

Season Series: Maple Leafs Lead 3-0

Tampa Bay’s offence is hot. Their 0-3 record against Toronto this year is not. The Bolts will look to avoid the season sweep against the Leafs.

Lightning Keys to Victory

Nikita Kucherov (34 goals/ 81 assists in last 5 games) is in full-on MVP mode, dishing out assists like he’s running a Costco sample station. Brayden Point ((5 goals/ 3 assists) has continued to be a menace in the offensive zone, while Jake Guentzel looks like he’s been a Bolt his whole life—racking up 3 goals and an assist in his last 2 games.

For Tampa to take down Toronto, they’ll need to lean into their speed game. Also: power play, power play, power play. Tampa’s man-advantage unit is scarier than some bathing suits on a Tampa beach. Toronto tends to flirt with the penalty box (we’re looking at you, Max Domi and your 67 penalty minutes), and if Tampa can cash in early, it might force the Leafs to play catch-up the rest of the way.

Speaking of Andrei Vasilevskiy—he’s still Tampa’s rock. He hasn’t always looked unbeatable this season, but he has allowed 5 goals in the last 5 games. So when he’s locked in a game, he’s the kind of goalie who can steal it like old people in a battery store. Do not forget his role in helping the Bolts go back-to-back! Do not sleep on Vaz.

Maple Leafs Keys to Victory

Toronto is coming off back-to-back games after playing the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.

Toronto’s offence is a bit like a race car: fast, flashy, and dangerous when it gets going. Auston Matthews is not having his finest season, his first as the Leafs captain, but he is always a force. William Nylander is in the two-spot for most league goals and could probably score blindfolded at this point. The Leafs need to own the puck tonight. When they control possession and play their high-paced game, they’re tough to beat. But Tampa thrives on turnovers, so Toronto’s breakout game needs to be cleaner than a post-Zamboni run-through. Defensively, the Leafs need Anthony Stolarz (on his 5-game win streak after a 6-game losing streak) or Joseph Woll, if he gets the nod, to be above average. No softies. Tampa loves to crash the net.

Prediction

NHL Predictions thinks this one has all the makings of a track meet. Both teams can score in bunches, both have elite players, and both have playoff aspirations that start *now*. Toronto’s top-end skill is undeniable, and the home crowd at Scotiabank Arena should give them a jolt. But Tampa Bay has the experience and a power play that can tilt the ice fast.

Expect some late-game drama, a questionable review or two, and at least one highlight-reel goal that makes the top plays of the week.

Prediction: Tampa Bay Lightning 4, Toronto Maple Leafs 3 (OT)

Top Prop Bets

Auston Matthews Anytime Goal (+120 odds)
Betting on Matthews to score is like betting on the sun to rise—unless Vasilevskiy turns into a brick wall, he’s due.

Brayden Point Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-115 odds)
Point is a volume shooter, and with Toronto’s defensive gaps, he should find space to fire away.

Final Thoughts

This game is going to be fun. Tampa Bay brings the playoff-tested swagger, while Toronto is still looking to prove they can hang when the lights shine brightest. If the Lightning can stay out of the box and execute on special teams, they’ve got the edge. But if Toronto’s stars take over and the goaltending holds up, the Leafs could skate away with a huge win.

Either way, grab your popcorn (or your Tim Hortons double-double)—this one’s got “instant classic” written all over it.
