NHL Predictions for the Western Conference Second Round, Game 5

Edmonton Oilers vs Vegas Golden Knights

Series: Oilers 3 – 1 Golden Knights

Time: 9:50 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

TV: ESPN, CBC, SN, TVAS

The Edmonton Oilers are on the cusp of advancing to the Western Conference Final after a commanding 3–0 victory in Game 4. Adam Henrique led the charge with two first-period goals, while Evander Kane added a goal and an assist. Goaltender Stuart Skinner, who made a spectacular return in the wake of a Calvin Pickard injury, made 23 saves to secure his first shutout of the 2025 playoffs.

The Vegas Golden Knights, facing elimination, must find a way to reignite their offence, which has been stifled by Edmonton’s disciplined play. Despite being the defending Stanley Cup champions, Vegas has struggled to generate consistent scoring opportunities, particularly at even strength.

Edmonton Oilers: Depth and Defence Driving Success

The Oilers’ success in this series can be attributed to their balanced attack and improved defensive play. While stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl continue to contribute, McDavid extended his playoff point streak to eight games with an assist in Game 4, the emergence of depth players like Adam Henrique has been pivotal.

Stuart Skinner’s resurgence in net is looking like a key factor as well. After early playoff struggles, Skinner’s 23-save shutout in Game 4 demonstrated his ability to anchor the team’s defensive efforts.

Additionally, the potential return of defenceman Mattias Ekholm, who has missed most of the postseason due to injury, could further bolster Edmonton’s blueline if they advance to the next round.

Vegas Golden Knights on the Brink

The Golden Knights find themselves in a must-win situation, trailing 3–1 in the series. Their offence has been largely neutralized, with the team failing to score in Game 4. Head coach Bruce Cassidy emphasized the need for more desperation and improved execution, particularly in breaking through Edmonton’s neutral zone trap.

Goaltender Adin Hill has played okay, making 29 saves in Game 4. The goal he gave up to Evander Kane was a back-breaker and one he would want back. Still, he requires more support from the skaters in front of him. The Golden Knights must find a way to generate sustained offensive pressure and capitalize on scoring opportunities to keep their season alive.

NHL Predictions for Game 5

With momentum on their side and a balanced team effort, the Oilers are poised to close out the series in Game 5. Their combination of star power, depth scoring, and solid goaltending presents a formidable challenge for the Golden Knights. While Vegas will undoubtedly play with urgency, Edmonton’s current form suggests they have the edge. McDavid is also due for an explosive, otherworldly game.

Prediction: Oilers win 4 – 2.

Prop Bets of the Night

We round out NHL Predictions with some prop bets of the night. The Oilers are plus odds on the moneyline (+110), which is great value. Draisaitl over 1.5 points is worth a look as well at +130. Lastly, take a look at Zach Hyman over 0.5 goals (+220), given his goal-scoring prowess. (Postseason Record: 14-18)
