Alistair Johnston Returns: CanMNT Predicted Lineup vs Honduras

March 29, 2023 by Last Word On Soccer

Soccer: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022-Canada at Morocco with Alistair Johnston Against Morocco at Al Thumama Stadium

Preview – CanMNT host Honduras tonight at BMO Field in Nations League action. It is the first match back in Canada for the CanMNT since clinching World Cup qualification nearly a year ago to the day. It will be Canada’s second match this international window, having won 2-0 in Curacao on March 25th. Should Canada pick up a win or a draw, they will advance to the semi-finals of the Concacaf Nations League. With a suspended player returning and a player suspended, the CanMNT predicted lineup will have a few changes from the Curacao victory.

How CanMNT Lined-up Against Curacao Recently

Canada returned to a familiar formation in their away match to Curacao. The 3-5-2 marked its return with Cyle Larin and Jonathan David starting up top. Watford’s Ismael Kone made just his third start for Canada in the midfield alongside Jonathan Osorio and Stephen Eustaquio. Alphonso Davies was positioned to play his familiar role at Bayern Munich, left wing-back. On the opposite of the field, Richie Laryea had the start at right wing-back.

It was a different look in a back three for Canada with Alistair Johnston serving a suspension from a red card received last summer. Scott Kennedy, Derek Cornelius, and Steven Vitoria made up this back three. Kennedy played out of position at RCB, with Vitoria taking the central spot and Cornelius out on the left. To no surprise for CanMNT fans, Milan Borjan had the start between the sticks.

Cyle Larin and Alphonso Davies made their way off the pitch in the 64th minute with Charles-Andreas Brym and Sam Adekugbe replacing the pair. Stephen Eustaquio and Ismael Kone did not put a wrong foot in but were replaced by captain Atiba Hutchinson and Mark-Anthony Kaye in the 70-minute. The final sub was Jonathan David coming off for Tajon Buchanan during the 78-minute.

CanMNT Recent Form and Tactics

Cyle Larin and Jonathan David were the goal scorers for the CanMNT against Curacao during the most recent fixture. Looking just at Concacaf fixtures, in their last 9, Canada has a record of six wins and three losses. While assessing their performances recently against teams outside of Concacaf, things aren’t looking as great. Canada has just two wins in their last seven (against non-Concacaf members) having lost all three of their games at the World Cup.

Against Curacao, Canada went back to the formation that worked well for them during World Cup qualification, the very flexible 3-5-2. Allowing the wingbacks to basically act as forwards and also have one of the midfielders push higher up the pitch.

CanMNT Suspensions to Consider for CanMNT Predicted Lineup

The Canadian Men’s National Team will be without a player for tonight’s game against Honduras due to yellow card accumulation. 36-year-old Steven Vitoria picked up a yellow card in the Curacao match following a challenge just outside the box. Vitoria went the full 90′ despite being on caution from the 55th minute onward.
