Carles Gil Shines as the Revolution Get Back to Winning Ways

June 11, 2023 by Last Word On Soccer

Carles Gil, Matt Polster and Bobby Wood scored the goals in the Revs latest win!

Have experienced a large amount of turbulence in recent weeks, fans of the New England Revolution would have been delighted with last night’s win. Carles Gil chipped in with a goal and two assists to make the difference at Gillette Stadium and sink Inter Miami.

Carles Gil Leads Revs to Three Points

Points Over Performance

Accumulating three points from six games is underwhelming for any team. There have been lapses in concentration and moments of misfortune along the way for the Revs and so this is a vindicated victory. Despite storming into a three-goal lead though, it maybe wasn’t a complete performance.

Head Coach Bruce Arena was hardly enthused by what he saw from the Revolution. “That was not pretty. The third goal was big, and I think our guys played after that like the game was over. The changes we made in the game didn’t help us at all. That was disappointing.”

Four of the players donning the Inter Miami pink were 20 years old or younger and so, in this post-Phil Neville-era, it was certainly a case of experimenting from interim boss Javier Morales. Experience was on the side of the home team and that showed on the score sheet, with Carles Gil, Matt Polster and Bobby Wood being the trio to find the back of the net.

Polster was asked about his celebration following his smart header that beat Miami shot-stopper, and this is what the midfielder had to say. “My wife was really upset when I didn’t do it the first time. She was like, ‘How can you forget?’ So this time, I tried to remember. I do have a second baby on the way. [My wife] has about two months left so it’s coming quick.”

The Magician That is Carles Gil

As has often been the case at Gillette Stadium in Arena’s tenure, it was Carles Gil who proved to be a cut above the rest. The diminutive Spaniard controlled the game like only he can do- as well as scoring himself, it was his eye for a pass that really came to the fore.

His boss was very frank in assessing his Man of the Match display. “He’s always good. You can copy that for the next 17 games as well. It’s going to be the same comment probably. He’s always good.” Gil remains the catalyst for this Revolution side and he will continue to make the difference as the regular season rolls on.

The opener came from the penalty spot after Polster was tripped by USMNT defender DeAndre Yedlin. Carles Gil stepped up and converted his sixth of the season before the roles were reserved and it was Polster who struck. In the early stages of the second half, Bobby Wood was on the receiving end of a very smart Gil ball, firing home to settle any remaining nerves at Gillette.

Wood led the Revolution line alongside Gustavo Bou as the Argentine returned to action, his first start since April. The pair gelled well together which could be a sign of things to come as Arena’s men look ahead to the visit of Orlando City to Foxborough next weekend.
