“It all comes down to the first game” says Clint Peay of the Revolution

Revs boss Clint Peay

After beating the Philadelphia Union on decision day, the New England Revolution will face Jim Curtin’s side once again. The first of a series of three in the playoffs kicks off tomorrow with Subaru Park being the location, and Clint Peay has had his say on it all.

How is Carles Gil Feeling Ahead of the Post-Season?

Carles Gil has been a class above the rest once again this season, scoring 11 and assisting 15 for the Revolution. Issues have played the part off the field with Clint Peay the latest of a few to be the main man in the Gillette Stadium technical area.

The Spaniard gave a brief scouting report on this weekend’s opponents. “It’s a team that we know very well. We’ve had many games [against Philadelphia] during the last three years. I think it’s a team that normally they play with a diamond, with two strikers, very good players up top with mobility. It’s always hard to play in [Subaru Park]. It will be difficult but we’re ready for a win.”

He put on a display worthy of the captain once again on decision day, assisting Gustavo Bou’s winning goal in front of their own fans. Talking of decision day and with the same opponents coming up now, one would be forgiven for thinking that this is ideal preparation.

Gil painted a very different picture on this matter though. “I think playoffs are always different. Also, it’s not just one game. We need to be back here and maybe a third game. It will be different. It will be very hard, but we had the experience of playing there in the playoffs [in 2020] and we had a very good result.”

Clint Peay is an Optimistic Figure

Clint Peay agreed with his captain when speaking to the media about the shift from a regular season clash with the Union to the playoffs. “I don’t really think it means anything. They call it a new season, the playoffs, and it’s a three-game series. This league is very competitive and on any given day, if you have a bad night [you could have trouble]. I think we understand who Philly is as a team, and what their strengths are.”

Peay has taken charge of seven Revs games now with the 2-1 victory over Jim Curtin being his second to date, both coming by the same scoreline. He may be new to this role but he has a number of players that can boast a wealth of experience.

When discussing these players who have the know-how, Peay said the following. “There’s a lot of experience on this team. Whether it’s in the starting 11 or coming off the bench, we expect those guys to understand the moment, and be able to weather the storm if that happens, in difficult times to be able to see us through. It’s going to be important to rely on those guys to keep us going in a positive direction as we tackle these games.”

These two sides are all too familiar with each other having regularly gone to battle in some major Eastern Conference games. Looking at the last five league games and it is impossible to separate the Revs and the Union, with two wins apiece and then a draw also. Only one of these victories came by more than one goal as well, this being Philly’s 3-0 win in May of this year.

Beating the Union on decision day is a huge confidence boost and one which was much-needed after New England had previously lost three on the spin. This promises to be a huge game and a huge series as well for both Clint Peay and Jim Curtin.
