Spirit vs Wave Predictions and Best Odds for May 6

May 6, 2023 by Last Word On Soccer

NWSL: San Diego Wave FC at Washington Spirit on September 10, 2022

After just over a month into this year’s NWSL campaign. Match week six kicks off this Saturday with a matinee matchup with the Spirit vs Wave facing off in DC. The San Diego Wave and Washington Spirit are respectfully third and fourth in the standings with both teams on nine points. This will be one of several nationally broadcasted matches on CBS this season. Here is why this clash between two top-four squads is the perfect showcase of NWSL action and a prediction of who will come out on top.

Washington Spirit Current Run of Form

The Spirit are so far on track to becoming the most improved team in the NWSL. After finishing second to last in the standings with just 19 points, Washington are now currently in fourth position to start 2023. With two wins and three draws this season, the Spirit are one of only two teams still undefeated. Outside of regular season play, their only loss came against Gotham FC in their first match of the Challenge Cup group stage. Washington has been led this year by the play of forwards Trinity Rodman and Ashley Hatch. Hatch is currently tied for the league lead in goals with four in the first five matches.

San Diego has managed to remain in the top three of the standings despite some shaky moments recently. The Wave have started the season with three wins and two losses. Their most recent match was a 3-1 defeat to an Orlando Pride team that had yet to get a result n 2023. In the Challenge Cup, they managed to defeat first-place Portland Thorns 1-0. Attackers Alex Morgan and Jaedyn Shaw lead the team with three goals each.

The last time these two sides met was September 10 of last year in D.C. Washington edged out San Diego in a high-scoring affair. Both teams were tied going into extra time. Then, San Diego’s Emily van Egmond conceded a penalty in the 97-minute. The Spirit’s Ashley Hatch converted the penalty to make it 4-3 in what would be the final play of the match.

Spirit vs Wave Prediction

Washington is 1-0-1 this year at home. Meanwhile, San Diego is 1-1-0 on the road. Considering that the Spirit are undefeated this year and were victorious under the same circumstances with a less talented squad in 2022, I think Washington will edge out the Wave at home 3-2.
